Flexible Work: Summer Pilot

Flexible Work: Summer Pilot 2022

University Initiatives & Policy and Human Resources conducted a summer pilot of select units across campus who tried new methods of flexibility. At the program conclusion, pilot participants were invited to share their experiences in focus groups so that the University can inform a strategic, data-driven approach to flexible work that is equitable and responsive to the unique needs of units across campus.

Whether your unit is already offering flexible work or are new to the process, we encourage you to explore additional flexible options.

Types of Flexible Work

Summer remote period(s) refers to 2-4 weeks of time during the summer when all work is completed remotely.

Fully remote work refers to an arrangement that allows an employee to complete all of their scheduled hours from home or another off-site location.

A hybrid work week refers to an arrangement where a specified number of hours are completed in the office and a specified number of hours are completed from home or another off-site location.

A compressed work week refers to a schedule in which the total number of hours worked each week are conducted in less than 5 full work days. Common compressed schedules include working 40 hours over 4 days with the 5th day off, working four 9 hour days with one 4 hour day and an afternoon off, or a "9/80" in which 80 hours are worked over 9 days with the 10th day off.

Important note: If you have non-exempt (hourly) employees, the 9/80 schedule will not be an option for them due to payroll regulations. Additionally, regulations may exist that complicate compressed work weeks for out-of-state employees who are non-exempt. Please consult with HR in these cases.

A flexible schedule refers to variations in start and end times for individual employees, but does not change the total number of hours worked in a work week (e.g. shifting your work day from 8am – 5pm to 7am – 4pm).

Core business hours refers to set times when all employees must be working/available, whether in person or remote. Time outside of core business hours are flexible and employees can log time whenever they are doing work (e.g. one employee may work 7am - 4pm and another may work 9am - 6pm. Both employees work the core business hours of 9am - 3pm).
